A new publication, The Cornucopia Institute’s Organic Soy Report analyses companies that market organic soy foods, such as soymilk, tofu and “veggie burgers,” on criteria they believe are important to organic consumers. According to online magazine, “Organic – Market.Info” the report points to “companies that are truly committed to the spirit and letter of the organic law while exposing those that do not rate highly or were unwilling to share their sourcing and production practices in the survey”.
The report also discusses the widespread use of hexane in processing by the natural food and soy industry. Hexane a chemical solvent is prohibited in organic regulations but is used to make “natural” soy foods and, it is claimed “even some that are made with organic ingredients”. But according to “Organic-Market Info”, the report tells of the good news that “in every market and product category, there are true heroes, supplying ethically-produced organic food that is worthy of consumer support.”
